About Me

I am a Southern California-based journalist and tenured journalism professor at the University of La Verne. I write and create audio stories on social justice, health, environment, media and more.

My work has been featured on local and National Public Radio, in Ms. Magazine, Women’s Enews, Huffington Post, the Online Journalism ReviewPasadena Weekly and more.

Under my leadership as chief adviser to ULV’s Campus Times, the publication has won more than 100 awards for individual stories and overall publication excellence from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Previously, I was a staff writer and editor for the Southern California Newspaper Group, where my series, "Pass or Fail" on the struggles of transient and undocumented public school children in SoCal's Inland Empire won a John Swett Education Writing Award. I also covered local and national politics, environment, tech and business beats and was interim business editor.

I was an arts and feature writer for Contra Costa Newspapers; education reporter for The Argus in Fremont, California; and Washington, D.C., correspondent for the Imperial Valley Press.

I am a Report for America mentor, a member of JAWS (Journalism & Women's Symposium), Center for Health Journalism, AIR media and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association as well as a former SPJ board member.
